This was one of those places you don’t forget once you see it in full flow. Most of the time, Grand Falls is dry or barely moving—but when it goes, it really goes.   I caught it right after a good runoff, when the water turns that thick, chocolate color and just pours over everything. It’s loud, messy, and a lot more powerful than people expect.   What you don’t see is what was behind me—a huge desert monsoon rolling in fast. I was keeping one eye on the falls and one eye on the sky, knowing I didn’t have much time before it hit.  This is located deep on the Navajo Nation, and the road took me through running washes and even standing water.  My Jeep was happy to get out and play!   I just happened to be there at the right moment—water running hard, storm moving in, and everything lining up at once.
